hy Consider a Business or Entrepreneurship
Not everyone gets excited about the idea of doing business or being an entrepreneur. Indeed, not everyone may turn out to be very successful in business. However, there are many very good reasons why an individual should consider a part-time or full-time interest in engaging in business and there is an opportunity to learn as they say on the job. Five (5) out of the many good reasons to get into business include:
1. To Increase Income
Increasing income tends to be the major reason why many people consider getting into one form of business or another. From Bill Gates of Microsoft, through to Aliko Dangote of Dangote Group, the fact is that you can dramatically increase your income overnight by starting a profitable business.
2. To have Flexibility and Freedom
One of the key attractions of getting into business is the opportunity to have flexible working hours and therefore the freedom to do other things. Starting your own business gives you that level of leverage over your time and work.
3. To be your own Boss
Running your own business gives you control. It prevents the likelihood of being bossed or ordered about and it is one of the reasons that some people would rather start their own businesses. Being your own boss also has the added advantage of giving you control over what is done and when.
4. To do what you are passionate about
People often end up doing jobs other than those linked to what they love. Invariably this tends to be stressful for them. The opportunity to do something you love and still earn an honest income is a good reason to consider pursuing a business idea.
5. To address a need in society
It is a fulfilling thing, to produce goods or provide services that meet a specific need in society. Watching a small business idea grow and satisfy the needs of other people can bring a person a lot of joy.
- Starting small
The business learning curve can be a very expensive one, so it is always a smart idea to start small and gradually grow. This has the advantage of reducing the costs of learning.
- Self-assessment
It is worthwhile considering some of the qualities required for a successful entrepreneur and concluding on whether you have what it takes. Some key attributes to consider include:
1. Alert to opportunities
2. Able to take calculated risks
3. Open to feedback
4. Strong desire for success
5. Analytical
6. Objective
7. Capable of systematic planning
8. Able to cope with stress.
- Identifying a good business idea or opportunity
The 3M model can be used to test whether a business idea you have is a good one or not.
1. Market – Is there a market or demand for the product or service you have in mind? If there is a definite demand, evidenced by people being willing to regularly pay for that product or service in the locality you are considering then the idea is potentially good. This is the most critical question for determining if a business idea is good or not.
2. Management – Do you have the management skills to produce and deliver the product? or service? Or do you know how you can get people with the right skills and knowledge to help deliver the product or service profitably? If you do, then you are on the path to success.
3. Money – The third key question is do you have the resources? Or do you know how to raise the resources to get this business going? If you are able to work around the financing of the idea and remember that it is always good to start small, then your business idea can be realized.
